Our Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Place.

On the surface, Lux may look more like an arduous university quiz rather than the latest pop record from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided across 4 different sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often through the prism of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars upwards here, carried by the lush presence of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of other artists appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux succeeds in escape dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, with complete credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to fuse the past with modern styles, the scale are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that truly raises this fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The track then shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—where you is going next."

Almost every track ends at a totally distinct place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame over a delicate symphony before disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused work starts off dark and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act on Lux is straddling the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spirals upward. That feat gets repeated on another expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive visionary.
